New Zealand has a North Island and a South Island, split by the Cook Strait. In peak season, which if from November to April, bookings are essentially as the ferry crossing is the only way to travel between the two island. In the North Island the ferry terminal is in Wellington, in the South Island the ferry terminal is Picton.
You drive on to the ferry, park your vehicle, relax in the lounge or on deck enjoying the scenery for the 3 hour crossing, then drive your vehicle off and continue your journey.
We suggest you book your ferry well ahead of the date you wish to travel, our Reservation team can book you a flexi-fare for the ferry crossing of your choice if you wish, this fare also gives you the chance to change the date if needed.
If you have a specific date you know you want to travel on, book direct with one of the ferry companies as you will get a better price, be aware that you will not be able to change the travel date if your plans change.
