Checking your tyre condition is a very important daily check when on a road trip. You are travelling much further and at much higher speeds than your daily commutes at home.
Turn the wheels out and inspect the tread depth and especially for uneven wear. Wheel alignment can be compromised very easily during your hire which will cause uneven wear. If you are not checking your tyres on a daily basis this can lead to an increased safety risk.
Just check visually that the tyre pressure is good. You can check the actual tyre pressure at a petrol station every 1000km (approximately). See HERE for the tyre pressure for your vehicle.
Tread depth:
The legal requirement in Australia, New Zealand and the USA is 1.5mm (1/16 inch). In the absence of a tread depth measure tool an easy way (but less precise) is to measure by inserting a small coin into the tread and comparing on a ruler or tape measure. There are also small bars of rubber running across the grooves in between the tread – called tread wear indicators – tell you when the tyre is worn out. If the tread is worn down to these bars on any part of the tyre, it’s worn out and needs to be replaced. If you identify this please contact customer care and we will direct you to the closest tyre store to have the tyre tread inspected and the tyre replaced if necessary. All forms of contact are listed at the bottom of this page.
Uneven wear:
If you notice uneven wear on your tyres developing please contact us as soon as possible. We will direct you to the closest tyre store to have the alignment corrected and if necessary your tyres replaced. All forms of contact are listed at the bottom of this page.
Visible sidewall damage
A quick visual inspection of tyre condition when you check your tyre pressure can help you detect damage early, reducing the risk of tyre failure.
A cut, bulge or missing chunk from the sidewall is usually the result of impact with a gutter or pothole and can make a tyre unsafe.
If you notice visible sidewall damage on your tyres developing please contact us as soon as possible. We will direct you to the closest tyre store to have the alignment corrected and if necessary your tyres replaced. All forms of contact are listed at the bottom of this page.
