This guide outlines the restrictions that apply to driving Travellers Autobarn vehicles in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
General Rules:
- Stay Paved: Travel is restricted to paved roads (sealed roads/bitumen roads in Australia and New Zealand) or well-maintained access roads less than 500 yards/metres long leading to campgrounds and parking areas. Venturing onto unsealed roads will void your insurance and leave you liable for any resulting damage.
- Weather and Road Conditions: Travellers Autobarn reserves the right to restrict travel in certain areas due to bad weather or road conditions.
- Prior Permission Required: Permission is needed before taking the vehicle on trips to islands, including Tasmania, Kangaroo Island (Australia) or anywhere outside mainland Australia. You'll be responsible for all related costs, including recovery fees, even if there's no damage.
America Specific:
- Mexico is Off-Limits: Vehicles are strictly prohibited from entering Mexico due to a lack of insurance coverage.
- Death Valley Restricted: Travel to Death Valley National Park is not allowed between May 1st and September 30th.
- Burning Man a No-Go: Burning Man festival is off-limits for Travellers Autobarn vehicles.
- Canada Requires Prior Fee: Vehicles cannot enter Canada unless the Canada Entry Fee is paid before pick-up. This can be done by contacting our Reservations Team or at the Branch when collecting your van. Travel to Alaska is also prohibited.
Australia Specific:
- Island Trips Need Approval: Prior permission is mandatory for trips to Tasmania, Kangaroo Island or any other island. Recovery costs from islands are your responsibility regardless of the situation.
New Zealand Specific:
- Restricted Areas: Vehicles are not allowed on Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Skippers Road (Queenstown), Crown Range Road (Queenstown), Ball Hut Road (Mt Cook) or the Coromandel Peninsula north of Colville Township. Additionally, all ski field access roads are off-limits from June 1st to October 31st.
Possible Consequences of Unauthorized Travel:
- Loss of Insurance Coverage: Travelling on unauthorized roads may void your insurance, leaving you financially responsible for any damage.
- Security Bond Withheld: If Travellers Autobarn suspects unauthorized driving, they may hold your security bond until a vehicle inspection is complete.
- Charges for Breach of Duty: Even if no damage is found after unauthorized driving, a $250 fee may be applied for violating the agreement.
Remember: Following these restrictions ensures you have a safe and enjoyable trip while protecting yourself from unexpected charges. Our vehicles are not designed for off-road travel. If you have any questions regarding these restrictions or specific destinations, don't hesitate to contact Travellers Autobarn before your trip.
For your own safety - do not drive on dirt/unsealed roads.
