New Zealand has a North Island and a South Island, split by the Cook Strait. In peak season, which is from November to April, bookings are essential as the ferry crossing is the only way to travel between the two islands. In the North Island the ferry terminal is in Wellington, in the South Island the ferry terminal is Picton.
You drive onto the ferry, park your vehicle, relax in the lounge or on deck enjoying the scenery for the 3 hour crossing, then drive your vehicle off and continue your journey.
We suggest you book your ferry well ahead of the date you wish to travel.
If you have a specific date you know you want to travel on, book direct with one of the ferry companies as you will get a better price, be aware that you will not be able to change the travel date if your plans change.
